Some Basic Tips About Wine

One of life’s greatest pleasures is enjoying a perfectly paired glass of wine with a delicious meal.  

The right wine can actually enhance the flavor of your food for a more fulfilling dining experience, and it doesn’t have to be intimidating or expensive for you to enjoy it.

Truth is,  you can enjoy a seemingly indulgent lifestyle while maintaining a happy and healthy diet.

One of the best things about wine is it can be enjoyed in small diet-friendly pours. And, if you pair it well, you won’t need a lotof it to feel satisfied. That way you can keep the calories down and still enjoy wine with your meals.

So, what is wine and how is it made? This can get complicated, but in a nutshell it’s fermented grape juice. Fermentation happens when yeast converts fruit sugars to alcohol. Plus, it creates bubbles that, when left in the bottle, give you sparkling wine or champagne.

There are lots of different types of grapes just as there are many types of other fruits like apples. (Think Granny Smith, Macintosh, Gala…) Classic varieties of grapes used to make wine include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. 

The difference between reds and whites is that red wine is made with the skins left in which gives it its gorgeous color and white is made without them. It’s as simple as that.     

To help you experiment with wines and food, here’s a quick intro to wine pairing:

  • White wines are made from grape varietals such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and can be dry or sweet. They typically pair best with lighter foods and seafood-based dishes.
  • Red wines come from varietals like merlot and cabernet sauvignon with the skins left in for color. They’re typically dry and offer bolder flavors that pair great with heartier dishes.
  • Sparking wines are a classic for celebratory occasions and they’re available in both dry and sweet versions. Because sparkling wine has higher acidity than other wines, the pairing possibilities are endless.
