Asian Shrimp Burgers w Wasabi Slaw

Take a break from traditional burgers with these surprisingly tasty shrimp burgers and enjoy a blast of heat from our super delicious wasabi slaw. Try them as a fun substitute for your family or guests at your next barbecue!

  • 1 lb peeled deveined shrimp patted dry
  • ¼ cup minced red pepper
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • ¼ cup chopped scallions
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • 2 TB light mayonnaise
  • ½ tsp minced garlic
  • ½ tsp minced ginger
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp sriracha or hot sauce
  • 2 whole wheat pitas halved widthwise
Wasabi Slaw
  • 2 TB light mayonnaise
  • 1 ½ tsp wasabi paste
  • 1 tsp rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • ½ tsp minced ginger
  • ½ tsp minced garlic
  • 2 cups cole slaw mix
  • 1/3 cup chopped red pepper
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro additional for garnish
  • 2 TB chopped scallions
To make burgers:
  1. Pulse shrimp in food processor until coarsely chopped (can also be done by hand). Combine all other ingredients (except pita) in a large bowl.
  2. Gently fold in shrimp until combined. Shape into 4 even ½” thick patties on a plate, cover and chill for 30 minutes to overnight to set.
  3. Coat a grill or grill pan with cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Grill burgers 8-9 minutes per side or until firm and pink throughout.
To make slaw:
  1. Combine mayonnaise, wasabi, vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic and keep chilled (may be made up to 1 day ahead). When ready to serve, combine dressing with remaining slaw ingredients.
  2. To assemble burgers, place one burger in each pita half and fill with slaw. Garnish with cilantro and serve immediately.
