Swedish Mulled Wine

This sweetly spiced warm mulled wine, known as glogg, is an iconic Swedish tradition that welcomes guests for a cozy celebration. Traditionally it's served warm poured over sliced almonds and raisins in small mugs; often with a slice of gingerbread and wedge of blue cheese on the side.

We mull our ingredients all together here but to follow tradition, you can add the spices, orange peel, and ginger to aquavit the day after Christmas to marinate and have ready for next year.

Ingredients

  • Zest of 1/2 orange
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 12 whole allspice
  • 10 cardamom pods
  • 2 slices fresh ginger
  • 1 bottle dry inexpensive wine
  • ½ cup port
  • ½ cup aquavit or vodka
  • 1 cup sliced almonds
  • 1 cup raisins

Instructions 

Combine orange peel, spices, ginger, and wine in a large saucepan. Heat on low to just below a simmer, cover, and warm for 30 minutes to infuse with flavor.  Add port and aquavit and heat until warm, strain, and serve immediately over almonds and raisins in small mugs. For fuller flavor wait to strain and keep chilled up to 1 week before serving. Reheat gently!
