South African Yellow Rice with Raisins (Geel Rys)

Slightly sweet rice pairs bright lemon flavors with just a hint of cinnamon for this traditional South African side. Try using your microplane as an easy-breezy way to zest your lemon.

  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups long-grain rice
  • ¾ cup raisins
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 TB minced lemon zest


Combine water rice, raisins, sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a medium sized saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for 15-18 minutes until water is absorbed and rice is done. Stir in lemon zest and serve.
